The Perfect High Priest: Our Direct Access to God

The entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, can be summarized in one simple yet profound phrase: life with God. This is the golden thread woven through every page of Scripture. In the Garden of Eden, we see humanity living in perfect harmony with their Creator. Then sin fractures that relationship. Throughout the Old Testament, we witness God’s relentless pursuit to dwell among His people—through the tabernacle, the temple, and ultimately through Jesus, who came to be “God with us.” The story culminates in Revelation with the promise that God’s dwelling place will be with mankind forever.
But here’s the pressing question for those of us living between Genesis 3 and Revelation 21: How can we have life with God right now?
The Problem of Sacred Space
God is described throughout Scripture as a “consuming fire” who dwells in “unapproachable light.” Moses was told that no one could see God’s face and live. We cannot simply waltz into the presence of a holy, righteous, and perfect God in our fallen, sinful state. We’re not fit to enter His sacred space.
Think of it like an operating room in a hospital. You can’t just let anyone wander into surgery. There are protocols, scrubbing procedures, sterile environments that must be maintained. The person who faints at the sight of blood has no business being in that sacred medical space. How much more so with the presence of the Living God, the source of all life?
We need a way in. We need someone who can usher us into the presence of God safely. The biblical answer to this need is a high priest.
Understanding the Role of Priest
The concept of a priest isn’t just a Catholic tradition or a pagan invention—it’s deeply biblical. In fact, the first priest appears on the very first pages of Scripture. When God placed Adam in the Garden of Eden “to work it and watch over it,” He was giving Adam priestly duties. The Hebrew words used here are the same ones later used to describe the work of the Levitical priests.
Throughout Scripture, priests fulfill five essential roles:
- Teacher – representing God to the people
- Representative – bringing the people before God
- Mediator – filling the gap between God and humanity
- Protector – guarding what is holy and sacred
- Caregiver – showing compassion and mercy to God’s weary people
This system was good. It was a gracious gift from God to His people. But it was never meant to be permanent. It was always pointing toward something—someone—better.
The Problem with Human Priests
Human priests had a fundamental limitation: they themselves were weak and sinful. Every high priest had to offer sacrifices not only for the sins of the people but also for his own sins. These priests could sympathize with the struggles of others because they shared the same weaknesses. But that meant they could only take people so far. They couldn’t fully solve the problem of sin because they were part of the problem.
Additionally, human priests were mortal. They died. The priesthood had to be continually passed down from generation to generation.
We needed a better priest. We needed a perfect high priest.
Jesus: The Perfect High Priest
Enter Jesus. Hebrews 4:14-16 declares that we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens—Jesus, the Son of God. This human being has entered sacred space that we cannot yet access. He is the answer, the way we can be connected to God.
Jesus is the better high priest in five crucial ways:
1. Jesus Is Sinless
Unlike every other priest, Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are—yet without sin.” He experienced hunger, tiredness, poverty, and uncertainty. He knows what it’s like to be human. But He never once gave in to sin. This means He can not only sympathize with us but actually lift us out of the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. Sympathy alone can’t save us, but a sinless Savior can.
2. Jesus Is Caring
Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance like a stern school principal waiting for you to get your act together. He comes alongside you with compassion. When money is tight and fear rises, Jesus sympathizes. When relationships are broken, Jesus understands. When health crises loom, Jesus deals gently with you. He is a compassionate and merciful high priest.
3. Jesus Is Appointed by God
Jesus didn’t sneak His way into office or appoint Himself. God the Father designated Him as high priest. This means you can have absolute confidence in Him. He was placed in this role by God as part of the eternal plan of salvation. From now until you breathe your last or until Christ returns, you can trust Him completely.
4. Jesus Is Prayerful
During His earthly life, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications “with loud cries and tears.” His ministry was marked by both praying and crying. He was deeply moved by the brokenness of the world. And here’s the incredible news: Jesus is still praying for you right now. Even though He has ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, He continues to intercede for you. Your great high priest cares more about the brokenness in your life than you do, and He’s lifting your needs before the Father.
5. Jesus Is Perfect
Jesus became the “source of eternal salvation” by being made perfect—not morally perfect (He was already sinless), but perfect for the role of high priest. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He became perfectly suited to secure not just temporary salvation, but eternal salvation. Nobody is better qualified. Nobody could do what Jesus has done.
The Danger of False Priests
Because we’re human, we’re hardwired to turn to priests. This creates a danger: when we worship false gods and idols, we also turn to false priests.
Consider these common idols and their corresponding false priests:
Money – We turn to financial gurus, stock market apps, business podcasts, and wealth influencers. But the gospel tells us we have a share in the inheritance of Jesus Christ Himself.
Beauty and Image – We consume endless social media content, makeup tutorials, and fitness culture, seeking to be known and seen. But God already sees you and loves you deeply.
Pleasure – We turn to pornography and other cheap substitutes. But Psalm 16 promises that at God’s right hand are pleasures that are eternal.
Self-Worth – We devour self-help content and fix-yourself programs. But Jesus says that though you die, yet shall you live.
Power and Control – We obsess over political content, believing the right candidate will give us heaven on earth. But true security is found only in God.
The question isn’t whether these things are inherently evil, but whether we’ve elevated them to the place of God. Are we spending more time listening to false priests than communing with the true God through Jesus?
You Are a Priest
Here’s the stunning twist: if you’ve trusted in Jesus, you are now part of the priesthood. First Peter 2:9 declares believers to be “a royal priesthood.” This is why Protestants reject the need for an earthly priesthood—there’s only one mediator between God and humanity, and that’s Jesus. Through Him, you have direct access to God. You don’t need to go through any other person.
And now you’re called into priestly service. You get to represent God to others. You get to bring others before God through prayer. You get to guard what is sacred. You get to teach others about the ways of the Lord.
Drawing Near with Confidence
Hebrews 4:16 gives us this incredible invitation: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
You have a perfect high priest. His name is Jesus. He’s sinless, caring, appointed by God, prayerful, and perfect for the role of your Savior. Through Him, you have 24/7 access to God—whether you’re traveling for work or in your basement in your pajamas.
Stop turning to false priests. Smash the idols. Draw near to God through Jesus directly. And live as the priest you’ve been called to be—representing the one true God to a world desperately in need of the only high priest who can truly save.
