The Supremacy of Christ: Discovering Jesus in the Book of Hebrews

Our world filled is with competing voices and endless options, but one truth stands above all others: Jesus is better.
The opening chapter of Hebrews presents us with one of Scripture’s most magnificent portraits of Christ. It’s a portrait painted with seven brushstrokes of excellence, each one revealing something profound about who Jesus is and what He has accomplished for us.
When God Speaks
Throughout history, God has never left humanity fumbling in darkness. Long ago, He spoke through prophets—men and women who declared “Thus says the Lord” with boldness and conviction. These prophets received visions, dreams, and direct revelations from God Himself. The Old Testament is filled with these divine communications, showing us a God who desires to be known.
But something changed in “these last days.” God spoke in a new and final way—through His Son. Not just another prophet, not just another messenger, but the Word made flesh. Jesus didn’t simply bring God’s message; He is God’s message. In Christ, all the promises of God find their ultimate fulfillment. As 2 Corinthians 1:20 declares, “For all the promises of God find their yes in Him.”
This is revolutionary. While other religions offer guesses from gurus or suggestions from wise men, Christianity offers God Himself speaking directly to His people, and then God Himself becoming one of us.
Seven Excellencies of Christ
The writer of Hebrews presents seven perfect descriptions of Jesus—seven being the biblical number of perfection and completion. These aren’t random attributes; they’re carefully chosen revelations of Christ’s supreme glory.
Jesus is the Heir of All Things. He owns everything. He rules everything. He can dispose of it any way He pleases. Revelation 5 depicts this beautifully, showing Jesus as the only one worthy to open the scroll—the title deed to the earth. He is both the Lion of Judah who conquers and the Lamb who was slain. He sits on the throne, receiving worship and adoration because He alone is worthy.
Jesus is Creator of the World. He didn’t become God’s Son through adoption or exceptional righteousness. He has existed from eternity past as the second person of the Trinity. All things were made through Him. The universe didn’t come into being without His creative word. This demolishes any notion that Jesus was merely a created being or an angel who achieved divine status.
Jesus is the Radiance of God’s Glory. Think of the sun in all its brilliance. You cannot stare directly at it without being overwhelmed, yet by its light, you see everything else. Jesus is like that—He makes God visible and approachable. As John’s Gospel declares, “No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.”
Jesus is the Exact Imprint of God’s Nature. The Greek word used here is “charakter”—the same root as our word “character.” When you look at someone’s character, you see who they truly are. In Jesus, we see the exact nature of God the Father. His compassion, His holiness, His justice, His mercy—all perfectly displayed in Christ.
Jesus Upholds the Universe by His Word. The delicate balance of creation—the precise distance of Earth from the sun, the rotation of planets, the forces that hold atoms together—all of it is sustained by Christ’s powerful word. The universe doesn’t unravel into chaos because Jesus holds it together. Colossians 1:17 confirms this: “In him all things hold together.”
Jesus Made Purification for Sins. Here we reach the heart of the gospel. Jesus didn’t just come to teach or inspire. He came to cleanse us from sin, to die in our place, to make a way for unholy people to approach a holy God. The cross wasn’t Plan B; it was the eternal plan of redemption.
Jesus Sat Down at the Right Hand of God. After completing His work of salvation, Jesus ascended and took His rightful place of authority. He sits at the Father’s right hand, interceding for us, ruling over all creation, and preparing to return as Judge and King.
The Light That Overcomes Darkness
John’s Gospel beautifully captures this truth: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” In our world filled with desperation and darkness, this is profoundly good news. When Jesus enters your world, darkness must flee.
Are you experiencing darkness in your life? Hopelessness? The light and hope of Jesus, when it enters, dispels the shadows. When you can’t see, when everything feels lost, Jesus is the light that guides you home.
Jesus Is the Answer
It sounds almost too simple, doesn’t it? Like the Sunday school answer that’s always correct: “Jesus.” But in this case, it’s actually true. The answer really is Jesus.
How can you know God? Through Jesus.
How can you be reconciled to God when your sin feels too grievous? Jesus paid the price.
How can you approach God when you feel unworthy? Jesus is your sympathetic High Priest who makes a way.
Are you struggling relationally, financially, physically, or emotionally? Look to Jesus.
Are you sick, sad, sorrowful, or brokenhearted? In your suffering, look to Jesus.
Is there relational strife and conflict? Look to Jesus.
Are you caught in a sin you can’t escape? Look to Jesus.
Better Than Everything
The theme that will echo throughout Hebrews is this: Jesus is better. Better than angels, better than Moses, better than the Old Testament sacrificial system, better than any earthly hope or dream.
This doesn’t mean the Old Testament was bad—it was God’s good preparation pointing forward to what would come. But now the fulfillment has arrived. The shadow has given way to the substance. The promise has become reality.
Jesus is better than your aspirations, even though God may graciously grant some of them. Jesus is greater than your sin—He came to conquer it so you could be with Him forever. Don’t let sin sidetrack you. Don’t let your ambitions distract you. Don’t let self-righteousness turn you away from Christ.
An Invitation
If you’ve been intellectually convinced about Jesus but haven’t fully committed, the book of Hebrews has a message for you: Don’t shrink back. Don’t drift away. Hold firmly to faith. Go on toward maturity. Appropriate this great salvation to your life.
The God who spoke through prophets and now speaks through His Son invites you into relationship. He wants you to know Him, to draw near to Him, to experience His transforming power in your life.
This year, make it your aim to know Jesus more deeply, more fully. Allow Him to transform your life. Soak up the salvation He provides. Experience the depth of the Father’s love for you in Christ.
Because ultimately, Jesus isn’t just better than everything else. He is everything. And in Him, you find life abundant and eternal.
