The Gospel That Grounds Us

Imagine putting on a pair of shoes designed not just for running, but for standing firm. These are the shoes of the gospel of peace, and they provide us with an unshakeable foundation. But what exactly is this gospel?
It’s the transformative message that though we were once far from God, we have been brought near through the blood of Jesus Christ. This isn’t just good news; it’s the best news. It’s the story of how God, in His infinite love and wisdom, sent His Son to live a perfect life, die as a sacrifice for our sins, and rise again, conquering death and establishing a new covenant of peace.
This gospel isn’t just about personal salvation. It’s about the reconciliation of all things under the rule and reign of Christ. It’s a message that breaks down walls of hostility between God and humanity, and between different groups of people. It’s a message that proclaims, “Though we were enemies, we are now at peace with God through Christ.”
The Shield That Protects Us
Alongside our gospel shoes, we’re called to take up the shield of faith. This isn’t a small, Captain America-style shield, but a massive, door-sized protection that covers us from head to toe. Faith, in this context, isn’t just a vague hope or optimism. It’s a deep, abiding trust in God that encompasses knowledge, agreement, and action.
True faith knows the truth of God’s Word, agrees with its claims, and then lives in accordance with that truth. It’s a faith that changes how we think, how we feel, and ultimately, how we act. This kind of faith can withstand the fiery arrows of the enemy – be they doubt, fear, temptation, or discouragement.
Defense That Advances
Here’s where things get interesting. While we’re called to “stand firm” and “withstand” the attacks of the enemy, this defensive posture actually serves to advance the gospel. Picture a line of Roman soldiers, each holding their massive shields, forming an impenetrable wall as they march forward. This is the image of the church, standing firm in faith while simultaneously moving the message of Christ forward.
This balance of firm defense and bold advance is crucial. Some Christians get so caught up in activism and forward momentum that they neglect to build a strong foundation, leaving them vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks. Others become so focused on defense that they never step out to share the good news. The call is to do both: stand firm and advance.
Practical Application
So how do we put on these shoes and take up this shield in our daily lives? Here are some questions to ponder:
- Is the gospel of peace truly your grounding? Is it the fundamental, foundational thing in your life, or have other good things taken its place?
- Are you always ready to articulate the gospel? Can you explain the good news of Jesus in a way that others can understand?
- If you were the enemy, what “arrow” would you use to try to take yourself out? Where are you most vulnerable?
- Does your faith include community? Are you linked up with other believers who can support you and whom you can support?
These questions aren’t just theoretical. They’re invitations to examine our lives and make sure we’re truly standing firm on the gospel and wielding the shield of faith effectively.
A Challenge
Here’s a bold challenge: Find a non-Christian friend or family member and ask if you can practice sharing the gospel with them. Be honest about why you’re doing it – you’re trying to get better at articulating this central message of your faith. This exercise not only helps you become more comfortable sharing the gospel, but it might just open up a meaningful conversation about faith.
The Power of Community
Remember, we’re not meant to stand alone. The image of soldiers linking shields reminds us of the power of Christian community. Together, we can cover each other’s weaknesses and amplify each other’s strengths. We need each other to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy and to advance the kingdom of God.
In a world that often feels like it’s pushing us back, we have the tools to stand our ground. The gospel of peace gives us a firm foundation, reminding us that our right standing with God isn’t based on our moral behavior, but on Christ’s perfect work on our behalf. The shield of faith protects us from the enemy’s attacks, allowing us to trust God even when circumstances are difficult.
As we put on these spiritual shoes and take up this shield, we become part of something greater than ourselves. We join the advancing kingdom of God, a movement that has been pushing forward since the resurrection of Christ and will continue until He returns.
So stand firm, dear friends. Plant your feet on the solid ground of the gospel. Raise your shield of faith. And as you do, know that you’re part of an unstoppable advance of God’s kingdom, bringing light to darkness and hope to a world in desperate need of good news.
