The Mystery Revealed: Discovering Jesus Anew

As we approach Easter, our hearts and minds turn to the profound mystery at the core of our faith – the revelation of Jesus Christ. This season invites us to rediscover the awe-inspiring truth of God’s redemptive plan, unveiled through the person of Jesus.

The apostle Paul, in his letter to Timothy, speaks of a “mystery of godliness” – not a puzzle to be solved, but a truth once hidden and now gloriously revealed. This mystery is not a concept or a philosophy, but a person: Jesus Christ himself. As we delve into this mystery, we find ourselves on a journey of discovery, tracing the footsteps of our Savior from his humble birth to his triumphant entry into Jerusalem.

As Jesus begins his earthly ministry, the revelation of his identity grows clearer. At his baptism, John the Baptist declares, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” The heavens open, and the Father’s voice thunders approval: “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Later, on a mountaintop, Jesus is transfigured before his closest disciples, his divine glory shining through his human form.

Throughout Galilee, Jesus demonstrates his divine power through miracles and healings. He multiplies loaves and fishes, walks on water, calms raging storms, and touches the sick, making them whole. Each act reveals another facet of his identity and mission.

The crescendo of this revelation comes as Jesus approaches Jerusalem for the last time. He has just performed his most astounding miracle yet – raising Lazarus from the dead after four days in the tomb. Word spreads like wildfire through the city. Could this truly be the Messiah they’ve been waiting for?

As Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a humble donkey, fulfilling ancient prophecy, the crowds can contain their excitement no longer. They cry out “Hosanna!” – a plea meaning “Save us now!” They recognize him as the “Son of David,” the rightful heir to the throne. For a moment, it seems the entire city is ready to embrace Jesus as their long-awaited king.

This triumphal entry marks a pivotal moment in the gospel narrative. It’s a public declaration of Jesus’ identity and mission, setting the stage for the momentous events to follow – his sacrificial death and glorious resurrection. The mystery of God’s redemptive plan, hidden for ages, is about to be fully revealed.

As we reflect on this unfolding revelation, we’re reminded of the early Christian hymn quoted by Paul:

“He was manifested in the flesh,
vindicated by the Spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed on in the world,
taken up in glory.”

This ancient creed encapsulates the essence of our faith. It speaks of the incarnation – God taking on human flesh. It points to Christ’s vindication through the resurrection, proving his divine identity and sinless nature. It reminds us of heavenly witnesses to his glory and the global spread of the gospel message. Finally, it looks ahead to Christ’s ascension and future return.

The revelation of Jesus Christ is not merely a historical event, but an ongoing reality in the life of every believer. Just as the disciples and early followers had moments of profound insight into Jesus’ true identity, we too are invited to experience fresh revelations of who he is and what he’s done for us.

For some, this may mean a first-time encounter with the living Christ – a moment of clarity when we truly see Jesus as Lord and Savior. For others, it might be a deepening understanding of his love, power, or calling on our lives. These revelations often come in unexpected moments – through suffering or joy, in solitude or community.

As we approach Easter, we’re presented with two invitations. For those who have never embraced Christ, the invitation is to cry out “Hosanna!” – to recognize your need for a Savior and turn to Jesus in faith. He stands ready to forgive, to heal, to make you new.

For those who already follow Christ, the invitation is to share this good news. In a world filled with darkness and despair, you may be the only one who can introduce someone to the love and hope found in Jesus. Don’t keep this treasure to yourself!

The mystery of godliness – God’s redemptive plan revealed in Christ – is the foundation of our faith and the source of our hope. It’s a mystery that continues to unfold in our lives, inviting us to deeper trust, greater wonder, and more passionate devotion.

As we journey through Holy Week, let’s open our hearts anew to the revelation of Jesus Christ. May we see him with fresh eyes – as the humble servant riding on a donkey, as the suffering Savior on the cross, and as the risen Lord bursting from the tomb. May we, like those first palm-waving crowds, shout “Hosanna!” and “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

Let this Easter be more than just a passing observance. Allow it to be a transformative encounter with the living Christ. Whether you’re crying out to him for the first time or rekindling the joy of your salvation, Jesus stands ready to reveal himself to you in new and profound ways.

The mystery has been revealed. The Savior has come. Will you receive him?
